AI Data Center Project in Georgia Raises Concerns Over Historic Cemetery and Environmental Impact
A $5.18 billion, 650-megawatt hyperscale data center project, known as Project Ruby, is being developed by Habitat Real Estate Partners in Muscogee County, Georgia. The proposed site is less than two miles from a century-old family cemetery, which has been in Debbie Jackson's husband's family since the mid-1800s and contains 22 graves. Jackson and other local residents have expressed concerns about the potential impacts of the data center, including fire safety, noise, light pollution, water contamination, and property value depreciation. The local planning commission has already voted to expand the project's buffer zone from 75 feet to 500 feet, but residents like Jackson feel this is insufficient. The project highlights the growing trend of data centers being developed in rural areas, often with little warning to local communities.
