Ransomware Attacks Surge Against U.S. Universities, Increasing Cybersecurity Concerns
Ransomware attacks targeting higher education institutions have seen a significant rise, according to a report by Comparitech. The analysis, covering the first half of 2026, indicates an 8% increase in attacks against universities compared to the previous six months. The surge is largely attributed to The Gentlemen ransomware group, which has intensified its focus on colleges and universities, accounting for 80% of its attacks in the education sector. The report highlights that while attacks on primary and secondary schools have decreased, the threat to higher education remains severe. The U.S. has been the most affected, with 34 confirmed ransomware incidents, followed by the UK and Brazil. The median ransom demand has also increased, with the highest demand reaching $1.9 million following an attack on Mount Royal University in Canada.
