South Carolina Confirms 30 Cyclosporiasis Cases, Unrelated to National Outbreak
The South Carolina Department of Public Health has confirmed 30 cases of Cyclosporiasis in the state as of July 21. These cases are not linked to the national outbreak associated with iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms, which has affected nine states. The national outbreak has led to a recall of iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico. South Carolina's cases are consistent with historical data, with the state averaging about 50 cases annually. The illness, caused by the Cyclospora cayetanensis parasite, typically spikes in the spring and summer months.
