Lowy Institute Analyzes Great Power Rivalry in the Indian Ocean and Its Impact on Australia
The Lowy Institute, an independent Australian think tank, has published an analysis on the resurgence of great power rivalry in the Indian Ocean and its implications for Australia. Historically, the Indian Ocean was considered a 'British Lake' due to the unchallenged British presence until the 1970s. Post-British withdrawal, the United States maintained dominance in the region during the Cold War. However, recent strategic guidance papers from Australia have started to emphasize the Indian Ocean's importance, particularly with the introduction of the Indo-Pacific concept in the 2013 Defence White Paper. The analysis highlights Australia's strategic position as a major Indian Ocean state and the need to align with countries like Japan, India, and France to maintain regional stability.
