Michigan Faces Flood Threats as Aging Dams Struggle
Michigan is experiencing unprecedented spring floods, putting pressure on its aging dam infrastructure. Many of the state's dams, built decades ago, are not equipped to handle the current water surges caused by increased atmospheric volatility and climate change. The state has over 2,500 dams, with more than 160 classified as high hazard, meaning their failure could result in loss of life and significant property damage. Despite previous funding efforts, including a $44 million grant program, financial resources for dam safety have dwindled, leaving many dams in poor or unknown condition. The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy highlights the urgent need for action as the state grapples with these challenges.
