Researchers from the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in Mumbai, in collaboration with colleagues from Southampton and Wuhan, have developed a new method for simulating complex materials using quantum computers. This approach utilizes the Derby-Klassen (DK) mapping, which efficiently represents electron interactions within qubits while minimizing computational demands. The DK mapping preserves interactions between fermions, allowing for accurate reproduction of low-energy properties in two-dimensional models through variational quantum simulation. This advancement reduces the computing power required compared to earlier methods, enabling scientists to model larger and more complex systems with current quantum technology. The team successfully incorporated constraints defining valid physical states directly into a Hamiltonian Variational Ansätz, improving accuracy and efficiency in calculations by exploiting particle-number conservation.

Researchers at MIT have developed tiny mechanical devices using soft polymers that mimic the firing behavior of neurons in the brain. These devices leverage the unique mechanical response of polymers at the nanoscale to process and remember information. By sandwiching a thin film of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) between two metal electrodes, the researchers created a 'nano-spring' that balances adhesive forces, allowing for controlled and reversible nanoscale mechanical reconfiguration. When voltage is applied, the metal plates compress the PDMS, altering the electrical current. The viscoelastic nature of PDMS enables the devices to dynamically remember the history of applied forces and voltages, converting this history into an electrical response, similar to how neurons accumulate charge and fire. This innovation integrates computing and memory within a single nanoscale device, minimizing the need for external components and leading to high energy efficiency and a compact footprint.
