Germany to Consider French Offer for SAMP/T Air-Defense System Cooperation
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has confirmed that Germany will study a proposal from French President Emmanuel Macron to collaborate on the SAMP/T air-defense system. This system, developed by a French-Italian consortium, is Europe's only locally made long-range air defense alternative to the U.S.-made Patriot system. Pistorius expressed openness to the idea, highlighting the potential for European sovereignty in air defense. However, he noted the challenges of operating two different systems simultaneously. The proposal includes long-term cooperation on technology development, which could be beneficial for Germany. The backdrop to this development is a shortage of Patriot interceptors, exacerbated by U.S. prioritization of its own military needs, prompting European nations to seek more independent defense capabilities.
