California Reports Historic Decline in Homicides Amid Strong Gun Safety Measures
California has reported a significant decline in homicides, reaching the lowest levels on record. Between 2022 and 2024, the state saw a 35% reduction in homicides, with the number of deaths dropping from 2,304 in 2022 to 1,768 in 2024. This decrease is attributed to California's stringent gun policies, including the use of emergency risk protection orders and gun violence restraining orders, as well as investments in violence prevention programs. The decline was most notable among Black and Latino males, who have historically been at higher risk of gun violence. Despite these gains, challenges remain, particularly in addressing domestic violence and racial disparities among gunshot victims.
