Moped Driver Dies After Newport News Hit-and-Run; Pickup Driver Faces Charges

Jonathan Jones, a 60-year-old moped rider, died after being struck by a pickup truck on August 19 near the intersection of Dresden Drive and Kendall Drive in Midtown Newport News. The driver of the pickup, Louis Allen Petteway Jr., 53, of Newport News, did not stop at the scene of the crash. Jones was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and succumbed to them on Friday. Police located Petteway and his vehicle later on the day of the incident, utilizing Flock cameras to assist in the search. Petteway was subsequently charged with driving without a license and failing to report an accident resulting in injury. He is currently being held without bond at the Newport News City Jail and is scheduled to appear in General District Court on November 30. The Newport News Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office will determine if additional charges will be filed following Jones’ death.

The driver of the flatbed truck sustained minor injuries and did not require hospitalization. The Greensboro Police Department’s Crash Reconstruction Unit is investigating the incident.

Man Arrested in Connection with Fatal Jacksonville Hit-and-Run

Alexander Rivera-Russo, 24, has been arrested in connection with a fatal hit-and-run crash that occurred on University Boulevard in Jacksonville on January 2. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) reported that Rivera-Russo was driving at a high rate of speed when he rear-ended a vehicle driven by Savana Pendarvis, 27. The impact caused Pendarvis’ vehicle to hit a utility pole and catch fire. Pendarvis succumbed to her injuries, and occupants in another vehicle were also injured. Detectives with the Traffic Homicide Unit identified Rivera-Russo as the suspect shortly after the crash, but he fled the scene and remained at large. He was apprehended in the Oakleaf area of Clay County with assistance from the U.S. Marshals Task Force and the Clay County Sheriff’s Office. Rivera-Russo has been booked into the Duval County Jail and faces charges including leaving the scene of a deadly accident. Authorities are also investigating whether anyone assisted him in hiding.
