WeChat-Delivered Compassion Training Shows Promise for Stressed Nursing Students
A new randomized controlled trial published in BMC Nursing indicates that an eight-week compassion training program delivered via WeChat shows encouraging exploratory signals for improving self-compassion, mindfulness, perceived stress, and psychological well-being among nursing students in Guangzhou, China. Researchers from Hong Kong Metropolitan University, led by Zhi Yang, conducted the study with 96 nursing students, assigning them to either an intervention group receiving the WeChat-based training or a wait-list control group. The program included psychoeducation, guided meditation, diary prompts, and emotional support. The study achieved an exceptional retention rate of 88.5%, suggesting that integrating well-being support into familiar communication tools like WeChat can overcome common barriers to digital mental health interventions, such as download barriers, learning curves, and stigma associated with specialized mental health apps.
