Chandler Ends Use of Automated License Plate Readers Amid Privacy Concerns
The city of Chandler, Arizona, has decided to discontinue the use of 40 fixed-camera automated license plate readers (ALPR) provided by Flock Group, Inc. This decision follows a routine audit that identified an unexplained anomaly in the system's use, prompting an investigation into potential misuse. The ALPRs, initially introduced in March 2024 as a pilot project with 14 cameras, expanded to 40 cameras by May 2025. Despite the termination of the service agreement, the equipment remains the property of Flock Group, Inc., and will be removed promptly. The city emphasizes that no resident's privacy was compromised, but it is taking steps to enhance safeguards and policies regarding future use of such technology.
