Ecuadorian Teacher Transforms School Garden into Antimicrobial Resistance Classroom
Belén Juca, a General Basic Education teacher in Ecuador, has innovatively transformed her school garden into a living classroom to educate children about health, the environment, and Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). As part of the AlForja Educativa program by ReAct Latin America, Juca's approach emphasizes experiential learning, where students engage directly with nature by planting, observing, and caring for sprouts. This hands-on method integrates various subjects, such as language and mathematics, into gardening activities. The initiative aims to instill a holistic understanding of health, connecting it to the balance between people, food, microorganisms, and Mother Earth. Children learn about the origins of food, the importance of hygiene like handwashing, and the concept of prevention as a form of care, subtly introducing them to the complexities of AMR.
