European Commission Initiates Consultation on Steel Traceability Requirements
The European Commission has launched a targeted consultation to gather feedback from stakeholders on the documentation needed to implement the 'melt-and-pour' traceability requirements under the European Union's Steel Regulation. This consultation, which will last four weeks, seeks input from various stakeholders including steel producers, users, traders, importers, and industry associations. The goal is to identify the most practical and reliable documentation to verify the country where steel was originally melted and poured. This initiative is part of the EU's efforts to address global steel overcapacity, which is projected to reach 721 million tonnes by 2027, significantly exceeding the EU's annual steel consumption. The consultation will inform the preparation of an Implementing Act, expected to be adopted by August 31, 2026, and to come into force on October 1, 2026.
