European Commission Approves €659 Million for German Semiconductor Projects to Boost Technological Sovereignty
The European Commission has approved €659 million in state aid for four semiconductor manufacturing projects in Germany. This funding is part of a broader effort to enhance Europe's semiconductor production capabilities and reduce reliance on overseas suppliers. The projects will focus on key segments of the semiconductor value chain, including silicon carbide materials, power semiconductors, metrology equipment, and specialized detector technologies. The largest portion of the funding, €353 million, will be allocated to Element 3-5 GmbH for the production of silicon carbide epitaxial wafers, which are crucial for high-power applications. Other recipients include Vishay Siliconix, KLA-Tencor MIE, and KETEK GmbH, each focusing on different aspects of semiconductor manufacturing. This initiative supports the European Chips Act's objectives to expand manufacturing capacity and strengthen supply chain resilience.
