Maryland and Virginia Implement Tax Holidays for Back-to-School Shopping
Maryland and Virginia are offering tax holidays to help families save on back-to-school shopping. In Virginia, the sales tax holiday is currently underway, allowing consumers to purchase qualifying school supplies, clothing, and footwear without paying sales tax. The holiday also includes certain emergency preparedness items and Energy Star and WaterSense products. In Maryland, the tax-free week begins on August 9 and runs through August 15. During this period, specific clothing, footwear, and the first $40 of a backpack or bookbag purchase are exempt from sales tax. These initiatives are part of annual efforts to ease the financial burden on families preparing for the new school year.
