Mississippi River Freight Operations Face Challenges Amid Weather Variability
The Mississippi River, a critical artery for U.S. freight transportation, is facing increasing challenges due to unpredictable weather patterns, including flooding, low water levels, and seasonal ice events. During FreightWeekSTL 2026, experts from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and American Commercial Barge Line (ACBL) emphasized the importance of collaboration between public and private sectors to maintain navigability. The Corps of Engineers is tasked with managing a 300-mile stretch of the river, ensuring a 9-foot-deep, 300-foot-wide channel. This involves dredging, bank stabilization, and underwater rock removal. ACBL, which operates 3,200 barges, highlighted the strategic importance of the St. Louis region, where 70% of its fleet transits. Enhanced forecasting and proactive planning are becoming essential as river conditions grow more volatile.
