Icelandic Coast Guard Monitors Russian Ships Near Maritime Border Amid Security Concerns
The Icelandic Coast Guard has been actively monitoring five Russian vessels that were detected near Iceland's maritime border on December 8. These ships, although outside Iceland's jurisdiction, drew attention due to their proximity to the country's economic zone. The Coast Guard, which regularly tracks vessels in the area, noted that the presence of Russian fishing boats near the legal boundaries east of Iceland is uncommon. Despite the unusual activity, the Coast Guard does not suspect any illicit intentions, as the ships appeared to be on trawling trips. The monitoring efforts are part of Iceland's broader surveillance strategy, which includes the use of remote surveillance, satellites, and real-time monitoring with patrol boats, aircraft, and helicopters.
