San Francisco's I-80 Closure Expected to Cause Major Traffic Disruptions
San Francisco is preparing for significant traffic congestion as a major section of the Bayshore Freeway, specifically the eastbound side of Interstate 80, is set to close for the entire weekend. The closure, starting Friday at 11 p.m. and lasting until 6 a.m. Monday, will affect the route between 17th and Fourth streets, preventing motorists from traveling eastbound across the Bay Bridge. This shutdown is part of a rehabilitation project on the 71-year-old Central and Bayshore Freeway viaducts, which involves replacing bridge joints and repairing the road surface. Caltrans officials have urged the public to plan ahead, suggesting that weekend traffic could mirror or exceed typical weekday rush hour gridlock. The closure coincides with the Cherry Blossom Festival, further complicating travel plans for residents and visitors.
