North Dakota's Rangelands Highlighted in International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists
The United Nations has declared 2026 as the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists, emphasizing the importance of these lands in sustainable development and economic growth. North Dakota, a state with approximately 30% of its land classified as rangeland, plays a significant role in this global initiative. These lands, which include private, state, and federally managed areas, are vital for soil and water conservation, livestock grazing, and biodiversity. Research conducted by the NDSU Central Grasslands Research Extension Center and the Natural Resource Conservations Service is enhancing understanding of these ecosystems. The initiative aims to raise awareness about the ecological and economic benefits of maintaining healthy rangelands.
