Alpine School District Parents Raise Concerns Over 'Hazardous' School Walking Routes for Students
Parents in Utah's Alpine School District are expressing significant concerns regarding the safety and length of designated walking routes for students, particularly those who do not qualify for bus services. Kimberly Contreras, a parent, highlighted that her son's designated 'safe' walking route to Lake Mountain Middle School is over two miles, taking approximately 45 minutes to traverse. This route, largely along Redwood Road, features busy intersections, ongoing construction, and a severe lack of shade, making it challenging during hot weather and potentially dangerous in winter when students walk in the dark and freezing temperatures. Other parents have also raised issues with routes on Pony Express Parkway, where students must backtrack a considerable distance to find a safe crosswalk, effectively extending their walk to school. District officials, including Transportation Director Rex Brimhall, have acknowledged the hazardous conditions after walking the routes with parents.
