Joliet Man Charged in High-Speed I-355 Chase After Evading Police
Jovan A. Smith, a 30-year-old convicted felon from Joliet, has been accused of leading police on a high-speed chase on Interstate 355. The incident began when Oak Brook police attempted to stop a silver Buick Regal, wanted for aggravated assault and aggravated fleeing and eluding a police officer in North Riverside. A Cook County Sheriff’s Office helicopter was tracking the vehicle. Smith allegedly exited I-355, stopped, then drove around a vehicle, onto a curb, through an intersection, and back onto southbound I-355, reaching speeds of approximately 85 mph. He reportedly cut across two lanes without signaling and passed a school bus on the shoulder. Police terminated the ground pursuit due to safety concerns, but the helicopter continued surveillance. Smith later ran out of gas on eastbound Interstate I-80 and was arrested at a weigh station.
