NTSB Report Highlights Pilot Error in United Boeing 767 Incident at Newark
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has released a preliminary report on an incident involving a United Airlines Boeing 767-400ER that occurred on May 3, 2026. The aircraft, arriving from Venice, struck a light pole on the New Jersey Turnpike while attempting to land at Newark Liberty International Airport. The report indicates that the plane came in too low, leading to the collision with the pole, which subsequently hit a truck. The captain, who was flying the aircraft, had over 16,000 hours of experience but failed to maintain the correct descent profile. The first officer warned the captain about the low and slow approach, but no corrective action was taken. Fortunately, there were no serious injuries, although the aircraft and the truck sustained significant damage.
