The term 'Subaru Socialists' has emerged to describe a demographic of young, educated voters who advocate for socialist policies while often being perceived as middle class. This group, typically in their thirties, is characterized by a cultural resistance to the traditional 'middle class' label, which they associate with suburban stability and moderate politics. Despite earning median incomes, many in this group struggle with housing costs, child care, and student debt. The political discourse around this demographic was highlighted during Kamala Harris's presidential campaign, where she proposed policies aimed at supporting the middle class, such as federal assistance for home down payments and child tax credits. These proposals were intended to appeal to individuals who, despite having stable jobs, feel economically insecure.
