University of Kansas Research Unveils New Primate Species, Challenges Evolutionary Models
A recent study conducted by the University of Kansas has introduced a new species of an ancient primate, Tetonius varleyorum, which is reshaping the understanding of primate evolution during the Eocene epoch. This research, published in the Journal of Human Evolution, highlights the complexity of primate evolution, challenging the previously accepted linear evolutionary model. The study, led by Parker Rhinehart, a doctoral student at the KU Biodiversity Institute and Natural History Museum, suggests that the evolution of the Tetonius genus involves branching speciation events rather than a straightforward progression. The findings are based on fossils discovered at Smiley Draw in Wyoming, which provide new insights into the biogeographic and evolutionary history of primates.
