Yangtze River Flood Controls May Exacerbate Flood Risks, Study Finds
A study by scientists in China and Europe has revealed that certain flood control measures on the Yangtze River may have intensified flood risks rather than mitigating them. The research, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, analyzed 500 years of flood data and found that human interventions, such as embankments and lake reclamation, have amplified the magnitude of climate-driven floods. These measures, intended to control flooding, have increased the severity of 100-year floods by 18% and 8%, respectively.
