Arson Investigation Launched After Fires at Maryland Psychiatric Hospital
Two fires broke out at the Springfield Hospital Center in Sykesville, Maryland, prompting an arson investigation by the State Fire Marshal's Office. The fires occurred in two separate buildings, both of which were vacant, and are part of a facility operated by the Maryland Department of Health. Firefighters from the Sykesville Freedom District and surrounding areas responded to the scene early Saturday morning. They faced challenges due to several out-of-service fire hydrants, necessitating the use of tankers to supply water. It took approximately three and a half hours to extinguish the fires. The hospital, which opened in 1896, serves as a mental health care institution and an educational facility for mental health professionals.
