National MagLab Receives $18 Million NSF Grant to Advance Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Research
The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded an $18 million grant to the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (MagLab), headquartered at Florida State University (FSU), to establish a new National Facility for Ultra-High Sensitivity Solid-State Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR). This new facility will feature a 23.5 tesla NMR magnet, one of the strongest in the United States, complemented by a microwave source and state-of-the-art probes. The goal is to provide unprecedented capabilities for understanding the structure and dynamics of matter at the atomic scale, which is crucial for U.S. priorities in biotechnology, energy, advanced manufacturing, and health. The new instrument is expected to accelerate data acquisition for a wide range of research, enabling scientists to study samples with higher sensitivity and analyze the entirety of the periodic table. Installation of the new magnet system is planned for early 2028, with access for global users beginning in 2029. Frederic Mentink-Vigier is ...
