DoD Increases National Security Space Launch Contracts by $11.4 Billion to Counter Global Advances
The Department of Defense (DoD) has significantly increased its budget for national security space launches, raising the ceiling by $11.4 billion. This move more than triples the existing pool of National Security Space Launch (NSSL) contracts from $5.6 billion to $17 billion. The increase is aimed at bolstering the U.S. space launch capabilities in response to advancements by Russia and China in space technology. The companies benefiting from this increase include Blue Origin, Impulse Space, Relativity Space, Rocket Lab, SpaceX, Stoke Space, and United Launch Alliance. This decision follows a proposed $71.1 billion budget for the Space Force in 2027, which is a 124% increase from its 2026 budget. The DoD's reliance on the commercial space sector is evident, as these companies play a crucial role in enhancing the U.S.'s defensive posture in space.
