NetChoice Challenges State Laws on Age Verification for Social Media Users
NetChoice, a trade group representing major social media companies like Meta, TikTok, and Snap, is challenging state laws that require age verification for app users. These laws, passed by more than a dozen states, aim to protect minors by regulating their access to social media platforms. NetChoice argues that such regulations infringe on free speech protections. A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll indicates that 61% of Americans support stronger oversight of social media companies, with 66% favoring age-verification tools to prevent children under 16 from accessing these platforms. Despite public support, Congress has not yet passed federal legislation addressing the issue.
