US and UK Collaborate on Prototype to Counter Underwater Vehicle Threats
The United States and the United Kingdom are jointly developing a prototype platform aimed at countering unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs), semi-submersibles, and other remotely operated vehicles (ROVs). This initiative is part of the Defense Innovation Unit's (DIU) Robotic Exclusion & Engagement Framework (REEF) and seeks to leverage commercial off-the-shelf technologies. The primary goal is to create a flexible, stand-alone system that can be integrated with existing military systems of both nations. The focus is on protecting ports and harbors from the increasing threat posed by autonomous underwater vehicles, which have advanced in size and sophistication. Current solutions are deemed fragmented, expensive, and limited, prompting this collaborative effort to enhance maritime security.
