Off-Duty Employee Arrested for Shooting Protester Near Colorado ICE Detention Center
An off-duty employee at a federal immigration detention center in Aurora, Colorado, was arrested after allegedly shooting a female protester. The incident occurred during a protest outside the facility, where employees were waiting for the demonstration to clear so they could begin their work shifts. According to Aurora police, the confrontation began when two women engaged in a verbal altercation with the employees and took pictures of their vehicles. The employee, who was in his car, retrieved a personally owned pistol and fired a shot, hitting one of the women in the foot. The woman's injuries were not life-threatening. The employee, who works for the private-prison operator Geo Group, was charged with attempted second-degree murder and first-degree assault. Geo Group, which operates the detention center under a contract with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), has placed the employee on unpaid administrative leave and is cooperating with law enforcement.
