Severe Storms Disrupt Texas: Flights Canceled, Floods Threatened, and Fires Sparked
Severe weather conditions across Texas have caused significant disruptions, including nearly 500 flight cancellations at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport and Dallas Love Field as of 4:20 p.m. local time on May 18, 2026. Over 30,000 homes and businesses are without power due to the storms, which are producing intense rainfall of up to 2 inches (5 cm) per hour. The atmospheric instability, combined with a frontal system, is creating conditions for thunderstorms, heavy rain, and potential flooding. Additionally, a wildfire known as the 'Stinky Fire' near Amarillo has burned approximately 2,570 acres and is 30% contained, according to the Texas A&M Forest Service. The National Weather Service has issued severe thunderstorm warnings across southwest Texas and a flash flood warning for the Fort Worth area, with rainfall totals potentially reaching 4.5 inches by 6 p.m.
