Researchers Uncover Unexpected Benefits and Risks of GLP-1 Weight Loss Drugs
Researchers, including Dr. Steven Heymsfield from the Pennington Biomedical Research Center, have identified both anticipated and surprising benefits and risks associated with GLP-1 weight loss drugs. While these drugs have been used for approximately five years, new findings suggest advantages beyond weight loss, such as improved arthritis symptoms, reduced pain and inflammation, and a decreased desire for alcohol. Studies indicate that GLP-1s can lower the risk of heart attacks, cardiovascular disease, and mortality, partly due to their anti-inflammatory properties, not solely weight reduction. However, concerns have emerged regarding adverse effects, including vitamin deficiencies like scurvy due to altered eating habits, a loss of enjoyment in eating (hedonia), and muscle and bone loss.
