Uyghur Couple's Love Story Shaped by a Forbidden Novel
A personal narrative recounts how a forbidden Uyghur novel, 'Leyighan Bulaq,' changed the lives of a couple, Yalkun and Rabia, from Xinjiang, China. The novel, which details the brutalities of the Cultural Revolution, was discovered by Yalkun in 2009 and shared with Rabia, sparking a deep connection between them. Their relationship faced numerous challenges, including strict government controls on Uyghurs, which made obtaining a passport difficult for Rabia. Despite these obstacles, they eventually reunited in Istanbul and married in 2020. Their story is marked by resilience and love amidst the backdrop of political and social oppression.
