Independent Candidates Secure Ballot Access in Illinois' 4th Congressional District Race

The candidates, including Lyons Mayor Chris Getty, Alderman Byron Sigcho-López, and former Planned Parenthood Action Fund member Mayra Macías, argue that the race has been unfairly dominated by the Democratic Party. The controversy stems from outgoing Rep. Jesús 'Chuy' García's last-minute decision not to run, which allowed Patty García, his chief of staff, to secure the Democratic nomination unopposed. The independents aim to provide voters with more choices and challenge the status quo in a district traditionally controlled by Democrats.
