2,400-Year-Old Shipwreck Discovered Off Greece with Ancient Amphorae Cargo
A 2,400-year-old shipwreck has been discovered off the coast of Andros, Greece, by the Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities. The shipwreck, dating back to the late Classical period of ancient Greek history, was found with a cargo of pointed bottom commercial amphorae scattered across the seabed. The discovery was made public by the Greek Ministry of Culture on July 31, 2026. Early estimates suggest the ship was carrying between 600 and 650 amphorae, used in ancient times to transport goods like wine and olive oil. The investigation is ongoing, with further research planned to determine the cargo's origin and contents.
