The research suggests that bacteria and archaea, the two primary branches of life, evolved separately from a common ancestor known as LUCA (Last Universal Common Ancestor). LUCA, according to the study, was not fully alive but relied on metals from hydrothermal vents to sustain its metabolism. Over time, these primitive organisms developed the ability to produce their own enzymes, leading to the independent evolution of bacteria and archaea. This finding challenges traditional views of a single origin of life and offers new insights into early evolutionary processes.
