Taiwanese Poll Reveals Strong Opposition to Chinese Coast Guard Patrols and 'One Country, Two Systems' Proposal
A recent poll commissioned by Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) indicates that 70.5 percent of Taiwanese respondents view recent Chinese coast guard patrols in waters east of Taiwan as an act of 'ill will.' Only 7.5 percent considered them an act of goodwill. These patrols, which Beijing describes as 'special maritime law-enforcement operations,' have been ongoing since June and are seen by Taiwan authorities as an attempt to create a 'false impression' of Chinese jurisdiction over the area. The survey also found overwhelming opposition to Beijing's political proposals for Taiwan, with 81.2 percent rejecting the 'one country, two systems' formula and 83.9 percent supporting the position that Taiwan's future should be decided by its 23 million people. Furthermore, 83.6 percent favored broadly maintaining the status quo.
