Study Links GLP-1 Weight Loss Drugs to Increased Hair Loss Risk in Diabetes Patients
A recent study published in The BMJ by researchers from the University of Pennsylvania has identified a potential side effect of GLP-1 receptor agonists, commonly used for weight loss and type 2 diabetes management. The study found that these drugs are associated with a higher risk of non-scarring alopecia, or hair loss, compared to other diabetes treatments like SGLT-2 and DPP-4 inhibitors. Specifically, the risk of hair loss was 37% higher compared to SGLT-2 inhibitors and 68% higher compared to DPP-4 inhibitors. The study involved a large sample size, comparing 12,004 patients using GLP-1 drugs to 15,221 using SGLT-2 inhibitors, and 11,964 GLP-1 users to 11,233 using DPP-4 inhibitors. The researchers suggest that rapid weight loss and nutritional changes, common with GLP-1 therapy, may contribute to this side effect.
