Virginia Joins National Popular Vote Compact, Potentially Altering Presidential Elections
Virginia's Democratic Governor, Abigail Spanberger, has signed legislation to include the state in the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact (NPVIC). This initiative aims to change the presidential election process by awarding all electoral votes to the national popular vote winner, regardless of state results. With Virginia's inclusion, the compact now represents 222 electoral votes, nearing the 270 needed to activate the agreement. The NPVIC seeks to bypass the traditional Electoral College system without a constitutional amendment, raising concerns about potential constitutional crises if implemented.
