West Bengal Reinstates Eggs in School Meals After Public Outcry
In West Bengal, India, the state government has decided to reintroduce eggs into school meals following public backlash against their removal. The initial decision to replace eggs with vegetarian alternatives was made by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government, which faced criticism from teachers, nutritionists, and parents. They argued that eggs are a crucial source of protein for children from low-income families. The reversal, announced by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, will see eggs provided separately by women's welfare groups, while a Hindu religious charity continues to supply vegetarian meals.
