Drought Conditions Impact Hard Red Winter Wheat in Southern Plains
The Southern Plains are experiencing significant drought conditions affecting hard red winter wheat crops. According to Farm Progress, regions such as eastern Kansas, eastern Colorado, and West Texas are reporting deterioration in wheat conditions, with abandonment rates between 30% and 40%. The five largest HRW-producing statesâTexas, Kansas, Oklahoma, Colorado, and Nebraskaâhave seen crop ratings drop to under 14% good to excellent, with poor to very poor ratings nearing 50%. The Advance Trading Inc. model has adjusted total U.S. all-winter wheat production to 1.207 billion bushels, a decrease of 19 million from the previous week, with HRW production specifically declining to 0.621 billion bushels from 0.640 billion two weeks ago.
