Hydrogen-Powered Shipping Could Deliver $284 Billion in Annual Health Benefits
A recent study published in Nature Communications highlights the potential global health and economic benefits of replacing conventional shipping fuels with hydrogen. The research indicates that hydrogen-powered vessels could significantly reduce air-pollutant emissions, improving air quality and reducing premature mortality rates. The study projects that a complete transition to hydrogen could prevent approximately 129,458 premature deaths annually, with the largest reductions in mortality resulting from lower ozone exposure. The economic benefits of this transition are estimated to be around $284 billion annually. However, some regions, including Singapore and the United Arab Emirates, may experience negative health effects due to localized increases in ozone-related mortality.
