National History Program Engages Students in Memorializing WWII Veterans
Students from St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin, participated in a unique educational initiative to honor World War II veterans through the National History Day's Silent Heroes program. This program, in collaboration with the Veterans Legacy Program at the Department of Veterans Affairs, allows students to research and write about the personal histories of American soldiers. The students then read these stories as eulogies at the veterans' gravesites. This year, the focus was on 'Untold Stories of U.S. Marines in WWII,' coinciding with the Marine Corps' 250th anniversary. The students researched the lives of Capt. Bill Bennewitz and Cpl. Harland Rosvold, both of whom served in the Marine Corps during WWII. The project not only provided a historical learning experience but also helped students develop research skills by encouraging them to seek primary sources beyond the internet.
