Rhode Island Delegation Secures $4.5 Million in Federal Grants for Local Fire Departments
U.S. Senators Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse, along with Congressmen Seth Magaziner and Gabe Amo, announced that Rhode Island fire departments and the Rhode Island Fire Training Academy will receive $4,538,706 in federal grants. These funds are designated to enhance fire safety, improve training, upgrade equipment, and purchase new emergency response vehicles. Specific allocations include Providence receiving $1,849,284 for breathing apparatus and training, Woonsocket getting $1,000,000 for an aerial ladder truck, and Coventry receiving $499,177 for an ambulance. Other departments in West Warwick, Prudence Island, Lincoln, and Newport will also benefit from these grants, which are part of the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program, Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant program, and Fire Prevention & Safety (FP&S) grant program. The delegation collectively helped secure $648 million in FY2025 funding nationwide for these competitive grant programs.
