Rabies Alert Issued in North Carolina After Infected Goats Visit Durham County Events
North Carolina health officials have issued a rabies alert after multiple baby goats from Farm Adventures Mobile Petting Zoo, based in Iredell County, tested positive for rabies. These infected goats may have exposed members of the public to the virus at various events across North Carolina, including two in Durham County, between July 28 and August 27. Officials believe the goats were exposed to rabies after a skunk entered their pen. Dr. David Weber, associate chief medical officer at UNC Medical Center, emphasized that the concern is specifically for individuals who had direct contact with the goats, such as hugging, kissing, or being licked by them. The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services has confirmed these rabies cases, prompting an urgent call for anyone who had direct contact with the animals to contact their local health department for guidance on potential post-exposure treatment.
