Bosnian Environmental Agencies File Charges Against Mining Company Over Lead Contamination Concerns
In Vares, Bosnia and Herzegovina, a new silver, lead, and barite mine has become the center of controversy after blood tests revealed elevated lead levels in over 300 residents. The mine, operated by Dundee Precious Metals (DPM), a Canadian company, has been accused by four Bosnian environmental agencies of contributing to the contamination. These agencies have filed criminal charges against DPM, urging the Zenica-Doboj cantonal prosecutors' office to declare an emergency situation. DPM, which took over the mine in September from UK-based Adriatic Metals, denies responsibility but acknowledges the issue. The company has agreed to finance further blood tests and is collaborating with local authorities to investigate the source of the lead exposure. The tests, conducted by health institutes in Zenica and Sarajevo, showed significant lead levels in the blood of residents, raising concerns about long-term exposure and potential health impacts.
