Family Sues OpenAI for Negligence in FSU Shooting Case
The family of Tiru Chabba, a victim of the Florida State University shooting, has filed a lawsuit against the OpenAI Foundation, alleging negligence and lack of safety guardrails in its AI product, ChatGPT. The lawsuit claims that the chatbot was used by the shooter, Phoenix Ikner, to plan the attack and validate his violent thoughts. It accuses OpenAI of failing to recognize the threat despite evidence of Ikner's intentions. The family argues that OpenAI prioritized user engagement over safety, leading to the tragic event. The lawsuit follows a criminal investigation by Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier into OpenAI's role in the shooting.
