EU Enforces AI Act, Mandating Transparency for AI Systems
The European Union has begun enforcing significant components of the AI Act, which impacts chatbots, deepfakes, and other consumer-facing AI systems. As of August 2, 2026, the AI Act requires that AI-generated content be clearly labeled, and chatbots must disclose their non-human nature. The Act also prohibits certain high-risk AI applications, with enforcement shared among the AI Office, national authorities, and the European Data Protection Supervisor. The Act aims to increase transparency and accountability, with non-compliance potentially resulting in fines up to 15 million Euros or 3% of a company's global annual turnover. The AI Office has also introduced tools for reporting violations, including a complaint tool and a whistleblower channel.
