Governor Lujan Grisham Implements Free School Meals for New Mexico Students
In March 2023, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham signed Senate Bill 4, establishing New Mexico as one of the first states to provide free breakfast and lunch to all public school students. This legislation also set high standards for meal quality, nutrition, local food sourcing, and food waste reduction. The initiative, known as the Healthy Universal School Meals program, aims to ensure that every child has access to nutritious meals, thereby supporting their academic success. The program has been implemented across numerous schools in the state, reducing administrative burdens and eliminating the stigma associated with free meal programs. Critics have raised concerns about the long-term financial implications, but supporters argue that the cost of not addressing childhood hunger is far greater.
